Project Overview

RELON-Kenya is a registered national network of RLO’s in Kenya as an association with the Registrar of Societies. The organization is a membership organization drawing members from both the urban and camp-based refugee-led organizations that aims to advocate for refugee participation and inclusion in decision-making tables and policy dialogues, which Refugee-Led Organizations would operate in, and ‘speak on one voice’ when advocating for refugee rights and interests on matters affecting their day-to-day lives in a capacity equal to the other key stakeholders and partners. We all reflect on this quote, ‘”Nothing for Refugees without refugees”.  This project is also aiming to Supporting the Development of Refugee-Led Organization Network of Kenya (RELON-KENYA) and capacity build its member organizations (RLO’s) in various ways.

RELON-Kenya exists to unite the refugee-led organizations (RLOs) in Kenya so as to link them with opportunities, ideas and funding, as well as provide a platform for the RLOs to network amongst each other and other key potential partners/stakeholders (at national, regional and global levels). 

 

RELON-KENYA is looking for competent candidates to fill the positions indicated here below;

 

 

Project Title: Community Legal Empowerment Program at RELON-KENYA

 

Positions: 2 (1 Legal/Program Officer, 1 Counsellor/Social worker)

 

Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya (All 2 positions)

 

Duration of Assignment: 11 months (with a possibility of extension)

JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

We are looking for a dedicated and intelligent Legal officer that will provide efficient and effective legal assistance to refugees that is reliable and courteous. That will also offer legal analysis and trainings to refugee leaders on refugee rights and obligations. 


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

·        Provide legal advice and court representation to clients (Refugees) for single welfare and public interest cases.

·        Conducting paralegal training to refugees-host communities.

·        Conduct community awareness forums and legal aid clinics and.

·        Conduct community sensitization campaigns on the rights and obligations of refugees.

·        Conduct research that will enable RELON-Kenya to build evidence that will inform its advocacy/litigation.

·        Legal awareness and education to refugees-host community members.

·        Helping communities to develop capacity to self-represent and lobby for legal protection of the refugees within their jurisdictions.

·        Carrying out legal surveys on identified subject matters on refugees for in- depth analysis and for decision-making.

·        Perform programme work and report writing on the project.

·        Conduct regular fundraising for program sustainability with other team members.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·        Must Bachelor’s degree in Law or equivalent qualification.

·        Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current and valid practicing certificate.

·        At least two (2) years of professional working experience with a reputable human rights organization or law firm.

·        MUST have Litigation Experience.

·        Excellent written and verbal skills in English and Kiswahili are mandatory.

·        Knowledge in advocacy and paralegal training on matters of refugees.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

We are looking for an emotionally intelligent Social Worker to act as an advocate and help refugees foster their capacities and coping mechanisms to improve and better their daily lives and experiences within specified standards and timescales.

 

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identification of the most vulnerable refugees in the community in need of protection and psychosocial support.
  • Assisting in the referral of vulnerable refugees in the community to partner agencies for appropriate intervention.
  • Assisting clients in receiving services by telephone and in-person.
  • Getting clients involved in beneficial activities.
  • Assessing clients and gathering relevant information.
  • Offering information and supporting clients and their families.
  • Contacting and making referrals to other agencies and services.
  • Participating in training, supervision, and meetings.
  • Provide crisis intervention.
  • Compile monthly and quarterly counseling reports on the referred cases and provide the best solutions to cases.
  • Analyze the behavioral trends and patterns of the referred cases.
  • Prepare monthly reports and donor-related reports within schedule.
  • Provide counseling services and other short-term therapeutic services to refugees, other forced migrants, and host communities in individual and group settings.
  • Coordinate the assessment, planning, and implementation of psychosocial programs.
  • Build empathic relationships and work with refugees in an ethical, respectful, client-centered manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Experience

  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills
  • Proficiency in English and Kiswahili.
  • Good team player with the ability to exercise diplomacy, flexibility, and assertiveness.
  • Proficiency in computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a demanding and high-pressure environment.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Community Development.
  • Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Counseling Psychology is an added advantage.
  • At least 2 years of working experience in the field of Social Work.  
  • Experience working with an NGO that deals with refugees is an added advantage.
